Trade shows and Design Awards

In addition to last weeks post on National Manufacturing Week, over the coming weeks there are a number of other events that are worthwhile noting in your calendar.  You need to register for both.

14-16 May  - Designex

In addition, this coming week UNSW will host the judging of the Australian International Design Awards in the roundhouse. http://www.gooddesignaustralia.com/awards/  There will be an opportunity for ID students to view the 2012 entries latter in the week.

National Manufacturing Week

National Manufacturing Week tradeshow at Olympic Park at Homebush. It was an opportunity to view the latest manufacturing processes and materials from around the world, many of which we talked about in Materials and Technology Workshop B last semester. CNC machining centres, CNC sheet metal punch presses, press brakes, welding methods, water and laser jet cutting, composite technologies, finishing methods, laser etching, sustainability etc. All these processes are being demonstrated on a continual basis.


The trade show is free to attend.

From Grad project to $938,771 on Kickstarter

Jon van Nieuwenhuizen, a ID graduate from 2000, is now tooling a new innovative Bluetooth speaker that has been funded to the tune of almost a million dollars (US) on Kickstarter. The shot above is from his graduation project he completed back in 2000. It is a Bluetooth media control unit that uses induction charging when placed in the 'fruit' bowl. After stints at Motorola and HP, Jon obviously has developed quite an expertise for intuitive consumer electronic devises. Vivid 2012 applications closing soon

Furnitex is pleased to announce applications for VIVID 2012, Australia’s longest running design competition and innovation showcase for new and emerging designers, are now welcome. Australian based designers and students of design are invited to submit their new products in furniture or lighting.

Celebrating its 10th year in 2012, VIVID at Furnitex will be held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, Southbank, from Thursday 19 July 2012 until Sunday 22 July 2012. Furnitex is Australia’s largest furniture and furnishings trade fair, attracting over 17,000 qualified national and international trade visitors.

VIVID provides a much coveted industry platform for new design talent from across the country. To this date it has assisted over 400 designers with more than 700 products to kick-start their careers.

With the categories, student, concept and commercial and since 2008 a fourth award for the most sustainable product across all entries, VIVID is the biggest drawcard and most interesting and exciting part of the fair pulsing with creative energy and talent as the heart of Furnitex.

VIVID 2012 is a design event not to be missed. Applications now welcome.

Industrial Design BE Research Link Grant opportunity

2012 Research Link Grant Program - The Research Link Grants Scheme provides a great opportunity for students to gain insight into research practice while developing research skills that will enhance future learning opportunities. The Faculty aims to promote and develop a research culture and the Research Link Grant Scheme, linking students to an experienced academic, is one aspect of the opportunities provided by the Faculty. The Faculty will be providing grants of $1500 to students who work with academic staff on staff-nominated research projects. All information and application forms can be found by logging into the Student Intranet on the BE website and looking under the Learning and Teaching link.

Brightgreen Competition Winner

Congratulations to Joseph Tan on winning the Brightgreen competition with RingLite.  

RingLite is a compact and portable lighting device designed for in-built laptop webcams and is targeted towards video bloggers and online broadcasters. Inspired by ring flash photography RingLite helps users to light up underexposed and unflattering video-recordings by incorporating a ring of 6 high efficiency LEDs placed around the webcam to provide a well-exposed and even illumination.
RingLite be clipped onto the laptop screen edges and is powered via the USB socket and features a USB cable organiser. Joseph designed his winning entry in the ‘LEDlight’ project conducted in Studio 3B during 2010

Hettich Australia in association with designEX and the DIA invite you to showcase your company’s best in The Hettich Design Challenge at designEX 2012.

Now an integral part of the event, The Hettich Design Challenge offers an opportunity for Australia’s top professional young designers  to work amongst peers and in front of industry leaders, promoting both the skill of the individual and your firm.

The three-day contest pits four talented finalists against each other live on the show floor at designEX 2012, with the winner announced on the final day of the show, Wednesday 16th May. The challenge is to create fully functional storage solutions from Hettich components for high density living spaceswith a generous cash prize for the winner of $2,500 donated by Hettich.

Eco Bike Design Contest 2012

Solsonica and POLI.design are offering €7,000 in prize money for innovative projects involving an electrically assisted bicycle and a photovoltaic shelter to protect and recharge it.

Deadline: 29th June 2012

Total prize money: 7000 euro

 The challenge is to come up with a new vision of two-wheeled electric mobility. Participants are requested to express their creativity in innovative projects involving an electrically assisted bicycle and a photovoltaic shelter to protect and recharge it.

The total prize money at stake is €7000 (€4000 for the best project, €2000 for the second, and €1000 for the third).

The Contest is organised by Solsonica spa, the biggest manufacturer of photovoltaic cells, modules, and solutions in Italy, at the cutting edge of research on the development of innovative processes and products to improve the efficiency of photovoltaic systems, and by POLI.design Consortium of the Milan Polytechnic, which works to improve the Design System of the Polytechnic and in particular the facilities and professors at the best experimental laboratories in Europe for design, through continuing post-graduate training, consultation and training for businesses, and internationalisation initiatives. The contest is supported by the ADI, the Italian Association for Industrial Design and the announcement was drawn up in accordance with the international regulations agreed with ICOGRADA, ICSID, IFI.

 The aim is to select innovative and functional projects that take advantage of the possibilities offered by photovoltaic technology and electrical energy to design a sustainable bicycle, confronting the new challenges posed by the optimisation of energy use.

The projects submitted by the candidates must embody the perfect union of design and functionality.

HOW do you enter? Each designer (or group of designers) will come up with a concept of an electrically assisted bicycle and a photovoltaic shelter to protect and recharge it. They will have to send a maximum of 3 A3 tables, a short report, and 2 images of the whole project in digital format to submission@ecobikedesign.com by the 29th June 2012.

The panel of judges will assess how innovative the project is, its functionality, and the design of the project, to choose the finalists (a shortlist of 3 candidates, who will be awarded the competition prizes). In the second stage the finalists will develop their concept on the basis of the guidelines they are given.
