Furnitex is pleased to announce applications for VIVID 2012, Australia’s longest running design competition and innovation showcase for new and emerging designers, are now welcome. Australian based designers and students of design are invited to submit their new products in furniture or lighting.
Celebrating its 10th year in 2012, VIVID at Furnitex will be held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, Southbank, from Thursday 19 July 2012 until Sunday 22 July 2012. Furnitex is Australia’s largest furniture and furnishings trade fair, attracting over 17,000 qualified national and international trade visitors.
VIVID provides a much coveted industry platform for new design talent from across the country. To this date it has assisted over 400 designers with more than 700 products to kick-start their careers.
With the categories, student, concept and commercial and since 2008 a fourth award for the most sustainable product across all entries, VIVID is the biggest drawcard and most interesting and exciting part of the fair pulsing with creative energy and talent as the heart of Furnitex.
VIVID 2012 is a design event not to be missed. Applications now welcome.

2012 Research Link Grant Program - The Research Link Grants Scheme provides a great opportunity for students to gain insight into research practice while developing research skills that will enhance future learning opportunities. The Faculty aims to promote and develop a research culture and the Research Link Grant Scheme, linking students to an experienced academic, is one aspect of the opportunities provided by the Faculty. The Faculty will be providing grants of $1500 to students who work with academic staff on staff-nominated research projects. The challenge is to come up with a new vision of two-wheeled electric mobility. Participants are requested to express their creativity in innovative projects involving an electrically assisted bicycle and a photovoltaic shelter to protect and recharge it.
The total prize money at stake is €7000 (€4000 for the best project, €2000 for the second, and €1000 for the third).
The Contest is organised by Solsonica spa, the biggest manufacturer of photovoltaic cells, modules, and solutions in Italy, at the cutting edge of research on the development of innovative processes and products to improve the efficiency of photovoltaic systems, and by POLI.design Consortium of the Milan Polytechnic, which works to improve the Design System of the Polytechnic and in particular the facilities and professors at the best experimental laboratories in Europe for design, through continuing post-graduate training, consultation and training for businesses, and internationalisation initiatives. The contest is supported by the ADI, the Italian Association for Industrial Design and the announcement was drawn up in accordance with the international regulations agreed with ICOGRADA, ICSID, IFI.
The aim is to select innovative and functional projects that take advantage of the possibilities offered by photovoltaic technology and electrical energy to design a sustainable bicycle, confronting the new challenges posed by the optimisation of energy use.
The projects submitted by the candidates must embody the perfect union of design and functionality.
HOW do you enter? Each designer (or group of designers) will come up with a concept of an electrically assisted bicycle and a photovoltaic shelter to protect and recharge it. They will have to send a maximum of 3 A3 tables, a short report, and 2 images of the whole project in digital format to submission@ecobikedesign.com by the 29th June 2012.
The panel of judges will assess how innovative the project is, its functionality, and the design of the project, to choose the finalists (a shortlist of 3 candidates, who will be awarded the competition prizes). In the second stage the finalists will develop their concept on the basis of the guidelines they are given.
